How to make your travel photos stand out

Recently, I answered the question, “Is a cell phone camera enough?” in relation to the two-week Antarctic cruise I took in February 2023. The positive feedback on my photos prompted me to write this follow-up article on how to make your photos stand out.

I hope those of you who enjoy photography, phone or otherwise, will find my tips helpful.

Taking the photos

Just shoot it. There are plenty of times when I’ve hesitated and missed what could have been a great shot. I’ve learned over the years to go with my gut feeling and whip out my phone to capture a scene so viscerally arresting before I even have any conscious thought. The beauty of digital photography is you can always delete photos that don’t work out.

In this image I took with my Nikon DSLR, I was taking photos of a vineyard in the Tuscan region of Italy when a hot air balloon flew overhead. I had time to basically point my camera up and shoot, and hope I got something worth capturing.
